A few years ago I carried a woven rattan basket home from a market stall in Central Java. It was nothing like the homewares I'd been buying back in Australia — the ones that frayed, wobbled, and ended up at the tip inside a year.
That basket is still on my shelf today. So I went looking for the person who made it, and found a small workshop where a single artisan wove every piece by hand, using a technique their grandmother had taught them.
What I learned is that these aren't novelty pieces. They're the rattan Indonesian families have lived with for generations — in homes across Java and Bali, passed from one to the next.
